Q1 - What is Canoe Space?
A1 - Canoe Space is a free local social network with powerful tools to help you create your own website and blog. Use your Space to showcase your life, stay connected with your friends and stay informed about your interests!
Q2 - How do I sign up?
A2 - To sign up, click on the Sign up now button on the home page and enter your e-mail address. If you already have a Canoe Passport ID, you will be prompted to enter your password. If you've forgotten your password, click on Lost password. If you don't have a Canoe Passport ID, you will be prompted to create one and select a password. Then, take two minutes to complete the remaining steps and you'll be ready to use your Space!
Q3 - How do I change my personal information (password, e-mail address, etc.)?
A3 - Log in to your Space and click on the My account link at the top right-hand corner of the page. Next, click on the My info tab to modify your personal information. To change your password, click on the Password tab.
Q4 - How do I add contacts to my list?
A4 - Creating lists is a cinch - just send an invitation to the Canoe Space members you want to contact by opening each member's Canoe Space page and clicking on the Add to contacts button in the vertical menu on the right. The name of the member's Space will appear by default in the "To" field.All you need to do is enter a subject line and a brief message, then click Submit.
Other members can send you invitations as well. Check the Invitations section to see who has asked you to be a contact, then simply accept or decline.
Q5 - How do I remove a contact from my list?
A5 - To remove a contact from your list, go to the Contact section at the top of the page. Scroll over the photo of the contact you want to remove and click on the Break contact link. Keep in mind, however, that your name will remain in this person's contact list until they break their contact with you.
Q6 - What is a tag?
A6 - Tags are keywords you enter when you want to search for content on a specific topic. For example, if you love architecture, key this word into the search engine to find other people with the same interests. Be sure to choose relevant tags when posting blogs, albums and photos, as your Space will appear in all search results using these tags.
Q7 - How do I delete my account?
A7 - Log in to your Space, then click on the My account link at the top right-hand corner of the page. Go to the Deactivation tab, complete the information requested, then click Deactivate my account.
Q8 - How do I report a bug?
A8 - Click on the Contact us link at the bottom of the page, select strong>Report a bug from the scroll down-menu, then click Submit.
Q9 - I forgot my password. What should I do?
A9 - Go to the home page and click on Lost your Passport ID/Password? Enter your e-mail address and within minutes, you will receive an e-mail containing a link that can be used to create a new password.
Q10 - What is a blog?
A10 - A blog is a personal website similar to an online journal or open forum, where the author (also known as a blogger), writes entries on specific topics. Visitors can respond to bloggers' comments and post information on topics of mutual interest.
Q11 - How do I make my blog private?
A11 - To make new blog entries private, tick the Only let my contacts see this box. You'll then have the option of selecting one or more specific groups or granting access to all the contacts on your list.
Q12 - How do I change my profile photo (avatar)?
A12 - To edit your photo or image, access your Space, go to the Profile section and click on the Edit icon under your photo. Use the Browse button to select a photo on your hard drive, then click Submit. Your profile photo (avatar) must be under 500 KB and saved in one of the following formats: .bmp, .gif, .jpg or .png.
Q13 - How do I create a photo album?
A13 - To create an album, click on the Albums tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page, then click on Add an Album. Give the album a name and short description and add any relevant tags. Click on Submit when you're done. To add photos to your album, click the Browse button, select your photos, then click Upload.
IMPORTANT
Only the following formats are accepted: .bmp, .gif, .jpg or .png. No other formats are supported. Photos in albums cannot exceed 2.5 MB, while your profile photo (avatar) must be under 500 KB.
Q14 - How do I add photos to an album?
A14 - To add photos to a pre-existing album, go to the Albums section, click on the album in question, then click on the Add a photo button. Use the Browse button to select your photos, then click on Upload. IMPORTANT

Q15 - How do I restrict access to my photos?
A15 - When creating photo albums, tick the Only let my contacts see this box. A pop-up window will appear, giving you the option of selecting one or more specific groups or granting access to all the contacts on your list.
Q16 - How do I delete photos from an album?
A16 - To delete photos from an album, click on the Albums tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. Go into the album, click on the photo in question, then press the Delete button at the top of the screen.
Q17 - How do I delete a photo album?
A17 - To delete an entire album, click on the Albums tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. Click on the album you want to remove, then press the Delete button at the top of the screen.
Q18 - How do I rename my photos?
A18 - To rename a photo or change its description, click on the Albums tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. Go into the album, select the desired photo, then click the Edit button at the top of the page. Rename the photo or change the description and click Submit.
Q19 - How do I rename a photo album?
A19 - To rename an album, click on the Albums tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. Go into the album, then click the Edit button at the top of the page. Rename the album and click Submit.
Q20 - How do I recommend a blog, photo album or Space to a friend?
A20 - You can share content with friends or family, regardless of which Space you find it on. Simply click the Recommend… (this Space/Blog/Entry) button in vertical menu on the right, add a brief message if you wish, and send it to one of your contacts, a group or directly to someone's e-mail account.
Q21 - How do I let other people know about my Canoe Space?
A21 - There are several ways to inform others about your Space!
Via your Canoe Space contacts
Access your Space and click on the Profile tab in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. Click on the Recommend my space link in the vertical menu on the right-hand side of the page, then select any members to whom you'd like to recommend your Space. If you want to recommend your Space to someone who is not yet a member, just key in their e-mail address instead.Add a short message if you wish, then click Submit.
Via your friends
Click on the Add contacts button in the vertical menu on the right-hand side of the page, then click on the Add contacts tab. Enter a friend's e-mail address or the name of their Space, add a subject line and message, then click Submit.
Q22 - How do I change the name of my Space?
A22 - You can only change the name of your Space once. To do so, select a new name that is not already in use and send it to our Customer Service Department via the Contact us link at the bottom of the page.
Q23 - How do I create my own video?
A23 - To create you own video, you need a digital device that can record videos (camcorder, webcam, digital camera or cell phone). Once you have recorded your video, give it a name and upload it to your Space.
For best results, we recommend using a Mini DV camcorder, as these cameras are widely available, produce high-quality results and take small cassettes. AVCHD camcorders are also recommended if you are recording to mini-DVDs or hard disks.
Q24 - What video formats can I use on my Space?
A24 - We highly recommended videos in the .mpeg/.mpg format, although the following formats are also accepted: .wmv .avi, .and .mov.
Q26 - How long does it take to upload a video to Canoe Space?
A26 - Videos can take several minutes to upload. The amount of time depends on your Internet connection and the size of the file you are uploading. Your video must be processed before it can be uploaded to the site and should be available on your Space one hour after you have transferred the data.
Q27 - How do I invite my friends?
A27 - Click on the Invite friends link in the vertical menu on the right-hand side of the page. Enter your e-mail address and password, select your e-mail service provider in the scroll-down menu on the right press Go. Tick the desired Canoe Space contacts from your address book, or click on Skip this step to invite contacts who are not yet Canoe Space members to join the leading Canadian online social network.
Q28 - What is an RSS feed?
A28 - An RSS feed (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, depending on the version) is a system used to send updates from sites that change frequently, such as news sites or blogs. RSS feeds give users access to recent news and updates without having to go directly to a specific website.
Depending on your Web browser, you can either integrate RSS newsfeeds or use a software program like Feedreader.

Q29 - How do I post a blog, blog entry, photo, photo album or video?
A29 - Share this… and Recommend this… are two different functions. When you Share content, you make it available to everyone on the Internet, whereas when you Recommend content, you send it to people you know in your contacts list.
To share blog entries, photos, photo albums or videos, click on the Share…(this blog/entry/photo/photo album or video) button in the vertical menu on the right-hand side of the page and select the icon for the website on which you want your content to appear. You will be automatically transferred to the site, where you can log in or create an account and post your content.
Q30 - How do I turn off e-mail notifications?
A30 - To turn off e-mail notifications, click the My email notifications tab under the My account link at the top of the page, then select the types of notifications you want forwarded to your e-mail inbox. (Note: you will not receive notifications via your Canoe Space account).
Q31 - What do I need to do to get my blog entries, photos and videos posted in the Featured section, or a video posted in the Editor's pick section?
A31 - Simply submit your content toneil@space.canoe.ca. If it meets our requirements, you could find yourself in the spotlight!
Q32 - How do I create a group in my contacts list?
A32 - Click on the Contact tab, then on Groups. To create a group, choose a name (e.g. Best friends), key it in over the New group default to the right, then click on Add. The new group will now appear in your contacts list.
Q33 - How do I change the name of groups in my contacts list?
A33 - Click on the Contact tab, then on Groups. Use the scroll-down menu on the left to select the name of the group you wish to modify, then enter the new name and press Edit.
Q34 - How do I manage groups in my contacts list?
A34 - Click on the Contact tab, scroll over the contact you wish to edit, then click the Edit groups link that appears. In the next pop-up window, tick off the group(s) in which you would like your contact to appear and hit Save..
Q35 - How do I delete a group from my contacts list?
A35 - Click on the Contact tab, then on Groups. Use the scroll-down menu on the left to select the group you wish to remove, then press Delete..
Q36 - How do I select an image for my photo album cover?
A36 - You have two options available to you. One is to open an album. You will see three icons below each photo. Use the one on the left to select your album cover with a single click of the mouse.
You can also click on a particular photo, then click the Edit button at the top of the page. Next tick the Place on album cover option and click Submit.
Q37 - How do I change the order of albums or photos?
A37 - Sorry, this option is currently not available.
Q39 - How do I edit photos in my album?
A39 - To edit photos, first select the album you wish to modify. You will see three icons below each photo in your album. Use the first icon to select an album cover, the second to change the appearance of your image, and the third to edit information linked to your photo (title, description, etc.).
Q40 - How can I tell whether the blog entry I recommended was actually sent?
A40 - After you recommend a blog entry and hit the Send button, it will disappear briefly while your message is being forwarded to your contacts and the Sending message… button will appear in its place. The Send button will reappear once your message has been successfully delivered.
Q41 - How do I change the colours on my Space?
A41 - Access your Space and click the My account link at the top of the page. Then click the Look tab, select your colours and hit Save.
Q42 - Personalizing your profile
A42 - Think of your profile as your business card. To personalize it, click on the Edit button under each profile section.
To add a photo or other type of image to your profile, click on the Edit button under the image box. Then, click on Browse to locate the file on your computer and click on Submit. Please note, the photo or image must not exceed 500 KB.
You can also include a motto that will appear under your name at the top of your Canoe Space profile page. You can choose a motto that reflects your personal philosophy or include a quote or a proverb of your choice. You can also change your motto at anytime by clicking on the Edit button in the profile section.
Be sure to click on Submit every time you modify the information in a given section.
You can edit your profile message at any time by following the steps outlined above.
Q43 - Adding an entry to a blog
A43 - To get a blog started, click on the Blog tab beside the Profile tab. Four new tabs will appear: My entries (to display your entries), New entry (to write a new entry), Comments received
(to display comments from other members) and Comments sent (to read comments you have posted in other blogs).
To write an entry, click on New entry. Add tags corresponding to the blog’s theme and topic, then let your imagination run wild and pen your text in the Message section.
Q44 - Adding a photo to a blog entry
A44 - To add a photo to a blog entry, access your Space and select the Blog tab. Then, click on New entry and enter a title.
Next, click on the Picture button (the second icon to the right of the formatting bar at the top of the text section). Upload an image from the Web or your computer, then click on Add and Submit. You can also remove the image at any time.
Q45 - Adding a video to a blog entry
A45 - To add a video to a blog entry, access your Space and select the Blog tab. Then, click on New entry and enter a title.
Next, click on the Video icon (the first icon to the right of the formatting bar at the top of the text section). Then, enter the embedded code from the video website. The code should begin with the following characters: <object width="425" height="350">.
Q46 - Adding videos to your Space
A46 - To add a video, access your Space and select the Videos tab. Then, click on Add a video and enter a title. You also have the option to enter a description, tags, categories or select a language. Click on Submit to transfer the data, then click on the Browse button to locate the file on your computer, then click on Upload.
Please note that it may take several minutes to upload your video. However, if your video has still not been posted an hour after uploading it, please inform us using the Contact us button at the bottom of the page.
Q47 - Adding content (videos, blog entries, photos, etc.) to your favourites
A47 - Use the Favourites tab to organize favourite items. You can add favourites to your Space at any time while browsing through the community by clicking on the Add to favourites button located in the vertical menu on the right.
Q48 - Sending and receiving messages
A48 - To send messages, access your account and click on the Messages tab in the menu bar at the top of the page, which will enable you to view your sent and received messages. To compose a message, click on the Write a message button and enter a destination address or select an address from the scroll-down list to the right. Compose your message, give it a title, then click on Send.
Q49 - Reporting inappropriate content
A49 - You can report any inappropriate content you find while browsing other Canoe Spaces. To report questionable users, blogs, blog entries, albums, photos or videos, just click on the Report abuse button in the vertical menu on the right.
Q50 - Sharing and promoting your Space
A50 - Share your Canoe Space and get the word out! To share your Space with friends and family, click on Recommend this (blog, photo, video, etc.) in the vertical menu on the right and select the Canoe Space members with whom you would like to share your site, or enter e-mail addresses of any recipients who are not yet Canoe Space members. Add a note if you wish, then click on Send.

Q1 - What is a Canoe Space Community section?
A1 - Sections are organized by area of interest. Whatever your passion, you’re bound to find a related group. Sports, entertainment, travel – you name it, we’ve got a section just for you! If the section you’re looking for hasn’t been created yet, send a request to support@canoespace.ca.
Q2 - What is a Canoe Space Community?
A2 - Communities are groups within sections that correspond to specific areas of interest. To find a community that interests you, select it from the list of featured communities (i.e., Hockey from the Sports section, Music from the Entertainment section, etc.). If you’d like us to create a community, send your request to support@canoespace.ca.
Q3 - What is a Canoe Space group?
A3 - A group is a specific community. You can create your own group and share it with others who have similar interests. For example, if you’re a big Canadiens fan, you can create your own fan club and ask others to join. Creating groups is easy – just select the appropriate section (e.g., Sports), then enter a community (e.g. Hockey). Or, if music is your thing, go to the Art and Culture section and select Music under Communities.
Q4 - Creating a group in Canoe Space
A4 - Creating groups is easy! Access your account, then click on the Create your group button at the top right-hand corner of the page. A pop-up form will appear with instructions to guide you. Should you have questions or require assistance, contact the Support team at support@canoespace.ca.
To create your group, follow the simple steps below:
- Create a name for your group.
- Create a URL (the web address for your group in the following format: http://space.canoe.ca/community/nameofyourgroup)
- Parent group (the section linked to your area of interest)
- Accept the Terms of Use.

| Motto | Similar to your Canoe Space profile motto, your group motto can be a quote or phrase describing what your group is all about. Your slogan must contain between 3 and 64 characters, including any spaces. In addition to spaces, you are free to use accents and punctuation marks in your slogan. |

| Keywords | Members enter keywords when searching for content on specific topics, so be sure to choose keywords related to your site. Accents and punctuation marks are not accepted, and you must include a space and a comma between each keyword. Keep in mind, members will find you site more easily if you choose relevant keywords. Q6 - Key functions available to group moderators
A6 - As the group’s creator, moderators have access to various options.
- Admin
When you access your group, the Admin tab appears in the horizontal menu at the top of the page. This tab can be used to change certain settings and parameters configured when you created your group.

Access this section via the content tabs (blog, photo and/or video) located at the bottom of your group’s page.

To access additional filters, select the desired content type from the scroll-down menu beside the Show tab in the top left-hand corner of the page.

You can link your Canoe Space group to other groups with similar interests.- Create a group;
- Access the page of the group that you would like to create a link with;
- Go to the bottom of the video section and click on the Suggest an affiliation tab under “Group’s actions”;
- Select the appropriate group from your list of groups;
- Confirm the link.
A new Affiliates tab will appear on your homepage, and can be used to bring up other groups with related content as well as those with which you have established links.

Use this option to remove members who are not affiliated with your group. When you use this function you will be prompted to indicate whether or not you want to keep the user’s content (blogs, photos and videos) in your group. - Block the selected members from the group
Use this option to permanently block members from your group and prevent them from adding content (blogs, photos and videos). When you use this function you will be prompted to indicate the reason for the block and whether or not you want to keep the user’s content (blogs, photos and videos) in your group. Blocked members will not be able to rejoin the group unless you remove the block.

The administration options are available in the Members section and can be accessed by clicking on the scroll-down menu beside the Show tab in the top left-hand corner of the page, then selecting Administrative options.
