Happy Belated 8th Birthday Apple iPod

Photo: EveryMac.comNot a day goes by or should I say minute goes by where there is not a new gadget being released somewhere in the world. Of course with that, I foolishly forgot that on Friday, the iPod celebrated it's 8th birthday.Hard to believe that a gadget such as this - one that you can find just about anywhere and everywhere is only 8.  I guess that a little more than 1 year for a dog, but in tech years, it's like a generation. The original iPod cost $500 and had a capacity of 5GB but unlike today's nano that had a solid state drive does photos and video and a whole lot more, this one actually had a hard drive in it.  It wouldn't be until 5 months later that you could get the 10GB model. It was white and used Firewire as an interface as opposed to USB 2.0 that it uses now. It has  2" mono screen witrh a resolution of 160 x128 and was only Mac Compatible. When you compare the latest hard drive based iPod - the iPod Classic it's only $279 and has a 160GB hard...

Smokin! HItachi DeskStar World's 1st 2TB 7200RPM 3.5" Hard Drive

It's big but it's little and also fast!  Hitachi announces the world's first 2TB (terrabyte) Hard Drive that's not only a mere 3.5", it runs at a smokin' 7200 RPM.  Dubbed the DeskStar 7K2000 packs a whopping 32MB of cache and a fast 3 Gbps interface (SATA). The 3.5" drive houses 5 platters  and uses PMR perpendicular magnetic recording to enable it to get that density onto the unit. While not as exciting, but of course relevant to many, Hitachi is also refreshing the 7k100 series (160GB to 1TB) to 7200RPM standards. These won't fit in laptops- their TravelStar series are 2.5", but the largest 7200 RPM unit (7K320) is 320GB max. If you can do with 5400 RPM, then you can go as high as 500GB (5K500).DataSheet can be found at Hitachi's Website...

No Case Necessary-Samsung Unveils World's Slimmest Watchphone

[Via Samsung HUB]It may not be available here yet, but when it does, chances are it'll be a hit. According to various outlets, Samsung has just unveiled the world's slimmest phone watch - or is it a watch phone.Called the S9910, this little beauty features a wearable watchphone with a tiny 1.75" display. It features a stainless steel construction, a leather strap with a scratch-resistant glass.Liek many good phones,  accoring to Samsung Hub, it wll have a speakerphone ( which should be interesting) and  also a music player. It expected to have voice recognition and the capapbility to sync to outlook.I'm thinking that at that size screen, it may be a little straining on the eyes, but to be able to carry one less piece of equipemnt and have a cool gadget to boot, what's a little squinting going to hurt. :)Strangely enough it's expected that this unit will ship first in France (probably because of telecommunications and regulatory approvals) and expected to sell for 450 euros - ...

iTunes 8.2.1 Sinks Syncing with Palm Pre

Apple released iTunes version 8.2.1 today. With this release owners of the Palm Pre will not longer be able to sync their devices using Apple's iTunes.Disabling the ability was confirmed by Engadget and according to sources Apple supposedly made good on it's promise. What promise that is, I'm not really sure - unless they mean that they will not support the syncing of non-Apple devices.I'm sure someone will either find a workaround or create an app the does it properly. But it would be as smooth as Apple's solution.

Sony Walkman Turns the BIG 3-0

Courtesy Sony.netWhile Canada celebrates it's 142nd birthday, across the pond in Japan, Sony is celebrating another birthday or maybe anniversary is more appropriate - the 30th, either way. It was on this day back in 1979 - when you still had 8-track players in luxury cars like the Grand Marquis that Sony unveiled what was to become the  final nail in the coffin, the death of the ghetto blaster and the birth of the true portable music player - it was the Sony Walkman. It was called the TPS-L2, big and somewhat unattractive by today's standard, but set the path and tone for what to become a mega business. It was promoted by having people walking around town with them. Sony also invited the press (in June '79) to observe people doing things like rollerskating while listening to a Walkman. The press themselves were given tapes to listen to to explain what was going on.According to Sony, onlookers watched in awe wondering why they could hear no sound. Today it's hard to find someone n...
