Apple Announces Over 100,000 Apps Now Available on the App Store

MARKHAM, Ontario—November 4, 2009—Apple® today announced that developers have created over 100,000 apps for the revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. iPhone® and iPod touch® customers in 77 countries can choose from an incredible range of apps in 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel. App Store users have downloaded well over two billion apps, continuing to make it the world’s most popular applications store.

Apple continues to improve search and discovery with new features including Genius for Apps, App Store Essentials selections, sub category listings and more valuable customer reviews. With the recently introduced iTunes® 9, it’s also now easier than ever to organize and sync your apps right in iTunes and they will automatically appear on your iPhone or iPod touch with the same layout.

The release of iPhone OS 3.0 this summer made over 100 new features available to iPhone and iPod touch users including Cut, Copy and Paste; MMS; landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth; shake to shuffle; parental controls; automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots and Push Notifications. These new features have been incredibly popular with customers and there have already been more than two billion Push Notifications sent to apps available from the App Store. Additionally, the recently introduced In App Purchase feature for free apps means leading developers will now be able to offer customers the choice of buying content, subscriptions and digital services from directly inside their apps.

Tech Curmudgeon John Dvorak at ICE 2009 Edmonton Nov 2-4

He's well known, outspoken and uncensored. No, he's not a comedian, but Tech Celebrity John Dvorak. John will be his usual self at this year's 27th Annual CIPS Conference ICE Conference 2009 being held in Edmonton Nov 2-4, 2009.

In addition to Dvorak, there is a host of incredible speakers lined up for this 3-day event. Here is just a taste of them.

Local hero Jonathan Schaeffer kicks off the conference sharing how his own innovations in AI led to a computer winning at checkers. Bell's Justin Webb talks about the next big show- the 2010 Olympics- and how IT is making it work.

Earth Rangers is going to recover heat energy generated by the data centre’s cooling equipment to help heat the building and/or domestic hot water.

Bill St. Arnaud of CANARIE (Ottawa, ON)- speaking on how IT plays a critical role in addressing climate change.

Brad 'Renderman' Haines- Edmonton born and raised hacker and security consultant. He fills his days working with his clients to advise them on securing their digital assets and fills his nights finding new ways to subvert technology to do things it was never meant to do.

Dr. Tom Keenan (Calgary)- whose topic is titled On the Internet, Everyone Knows You're a Dog: How suddenly and surreptitiously information about you is in the hands of the wrong people.... and what to do about it

Happy Belated 8th Birthday Apple iPod

Not a day goes by or should I say minute goes by where there is not a new gadget being released somewhere in the world.
Of course with that, I foolishly forgot that on Friday, the iPod celebrated it's 8th birthday.

Hard to believe that a gadget such as this - one that you can find just about anywhere and everywhere is only 8. I guess that a little more than 1 year for a dog, but in tech years, it's like a generation.

The original iPod cost $500 and had a capacity of 5GB but unlike today's nano that had a solid state drive does photos and video and a whole lot more, this one actually had a hard drive in it. It wouldn't be until 5 months later that you could get the 10GB model.

It was white and used Firewire as an interface as opposed to USB 2.0that it uses now. It has 2" mono screen witrh a resolution of 160 x128and was only Mac Compatible.

When you compare the latest hard drive based iPod - the iPod Classic it's only $279 and has a 160GB hard drive. It's also significantly more rleiable and robust

iPhone Tech Talk World Tour 2009

Double Your PS3 Storage for $50 Starting Nov 3

Less than 2 months after the release of the slimmed down 120GB version of the
PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system($299 CDN SRP), Sony Computer Entertainment Canada announced that November 3rd, there will be a 250GB version for $349.99 CDN SRP.

There will be no changes to the unit and the 120gb version will still remain available.

“The PS3 platform is poised for a tremendous holiday season,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA (America). “We kicked things off early with the new price point and sleek form factor and have continued the momentum with this week’s launch of the universally acclaimed exclusive, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The new 250GB PS3 provides consumers with another compelling hardware option and speaks to the growing consumer appetite for digital content from the PlayStation Network – particularly high-def content that showcases the power of the PS3 system.”

The demand for storage doesn't seem to stop. SCEA claims that over 600 million pieces of content has been downloaded from their PS Network since the launch of the new PS3 unit in September.

While an additional $50 seems to be a no-brainer for over twice the capacity, one wonders if it will be enough. With the price of terabyte drives dropping below $100, one wonders if the 120GB version is even worthwhile.
