ive been on here for a year now.the older ya get the faster the time goes.after the end of the msn groups i wandered all over the net and ended up on canoe.ca.thanx for having me.in april my wife and i usually plan what to put in the garden, but the last few years we have wondered if we should have one at all.last year we were going to miss because of our planned trip to ontario.i fear gardening is in our blood. i opened our pail with the veggie seeds and there was a half pack of radish seed.well we should at least put that in. yep. that led to a full garden complete with spuds and squash. this year we been talking banff and/or n/sask. "its going to be too dry for a garden this year" i told my garden loving wife. " we will see" she said. i thot geez im not going to get all those photos of banff i want. iwent in for lunch today and thot id plead my case and there on the table was a half pack of radish seed....

Fall Planting

Removing summer plants from the garden, raking up the leaves…these and lots of other fall gardening tasks are undoubtedly on your to-do list.

Add one more thing to that list if it's not already there: planting. Yes, planting. There are any number of cool-season vegetables you can still get started that will produce a tasty fall crop if planted now. It’s also a good time to plant bulbs, annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees.

Try some of these tips if you're thinking of planting this late in the season.

What are you going to plant in your garden in the next few weeks?

Cynthia
Commnity Editor

How do you get rid of earwigs?

I've recently been hearing from people that they've got earwigs. Yucky bugs! And they bite, don't they. I remember when we had an infestation of the things years ago here in Montreal. I was afraid to go to sleep--that I would work up covered in them! Gives me the willies just thinking about it.

I've heard several interesting suggestions on how to get rid of them, including lighting a candle and letting it soften, then putting it down in the ground so the earwigs crawl in and get stuck as the candle hardens. What, I wondered, attracts the bugs to the candle in the first place?

So, how do you get rid of earwigs? Any homemade remedies you'd like to share?

Cynthia
Community Editor

Flowers Are Blooming

Well, even though it's raining here today, the first week of August the sun was shining. And finally, the flowers are blooming like crazy. I'm so glad to see a number of new albums posted in the Garden Centre. If you haven't had a chance to view the garden albums or videos — I know there's tons of pets on the site that are too adorable to miss — then it's time for a look-see. I think you'll really enjoy the colour and beauty of the photos that some of our members have taken the time to put together.

And while you're in an album, don't forget to rate the photos and comment on them too!

Cynthia
Community Editor

Veggie Delight

Does anything taste better than fresh-picked veggies? Is anything healthier—especially when they’re from your own garden. If you didn’t plant a veggiegarden this year, it’s not too late. Here are a few late bloomers you stillhave time to grow.

Mesclun mixes, which include a variety of tender leaflettuces, arugula, kale, spinach and radicchio.

Radishes, if you like that kind of thing, are very quick tomature.

Beets. This is one veggie I started to truly enjoy in thelast decade.

Spinach likes cool weather, so you can plant it over thenext few weeks and have plenty of greens through first frost.

What crops are you growing in your garden? Which do youstill intend to plant over the coming weeks? Share your stories and yourgardening tips by commenting on this blog.

Cynthia Shannon
Community Editor

How does your garden grow?

What kind of plants do you grow: vegetables, shrubs, flowers...? I'm usually at a total loss when it comes to identifying plant life. I can recognize carrot tops. My grandpa in New Brunswick had a huge garden when I was growing up. And whenever we visited during the summer, my cousins and I would pull carrots and eat them straight from the garden. A little dirt never killed anyone they say, and so far, they're right!. And I know lilacs (who can miss that lovely scent), tulips and roses. Not much else. So, please share pictures of your garden and tell us about the plants you grow. Maybe I'll learn something.

Cynthia
Community Editor
