TGIF 03/26/10--Car!

by OCeditorgary on Mar 26 10, 04:33 PM
If you grew up in Canada, chances are you’ve played street hockey at some time or another. And maybe you still do--with your kids and your buddies.  By now, street hockey -- with its boisterous  exchanges of Pass!, Shoot!, and What a Save!; the give-and-take rhythm of running shoes and sticks on pavement; and the ubiquitous shout of “Car!” and requisite shuffling of nets to allow the passage of traffic--is deeply rooted in Canadian culture.

That’s why so many of us here in Montreal were shocked to learn that a dad was fined $75  last Saturday for playing street hockey with his seven-year old son and a group of about 15 other kids and adults. Turns out that a not-so-neighbourly neighbour--who, admittedly, was well within her rights--had a preference for peace and quiet along her crescent avenue on any give Saturday and called the cops to put an end to the game.  The dad in question, Mr. David Sasson refused to halt the game taking place in front of his home and so was presented with the ticket. Claiming that he’d rather see kids playing, having fun and getting some exercise outside, rather than be glued to a computer screen, game station or television set indoors, he vows to protest the ticket in court.

Personally, I think there was probably room for compromise between the two neighbours before the police were called in, but, failing that, I’d certainly fight that ticket. Shouldn’t kids -- under parental supervision, no less -- be allowed to play outside? Or are we going the legistate the fun right out of life?

Maybe we should get a petition going that Mr. Sasson could bring to court with him. If you think that’s a good idea, add your name and a comment below, and then pass this link on to your friends and  family members. If the petition catches on, I’ll make sure it ends up with Mr. Sasson.

In the meantime, pass the ball -- I’m in the clear! Oh, wait...Car.

Hi I also believe that children need to grt outside and play. There is nothing wrong with street hockey if supervised. Hurray for Mr. Sasson for getting out there with kids for fun. If this game was not late at night shame on the squealer who could always buy a set of earplugs to cut down on the noise.  April 7th /10  by outwest

I also think it is absolutely fantastic that Mr. Sasson is out there "Doing" with the kids. I also agree that as long as there is some sort of supervision, there's nothing wrong with it. In a matter of fact, this also goes along way towards keeping the kids out of trouble, and rather involved with something productive. I think any judge should be able to agree with that.SGeworsky

We never need adult supervision when I grew up in Verdun back in the 1950's.  The outdoor rinks were always full of the bigger kids playing organized hockey so all we had was the streets of our neighbourhood.  I thought that any noise bylaw referred to electronic devices late at night.  I can't understand this lady's objection to children playing outside her house.  The judge should certainly throw this out of his court and reprimand the officer who issued the citation.  Hats off to this dad playing with his kids.

We were lucky where I lived. We were on a dead end street so ther was not too much traffic. But the few cars that came by were very patient with us,giving us time to get the nets out of the way. Supervision? never had any, didn't need any, we policed ourselves and had a real great time.  Let's not let some over zealous politocrat take another part of what we are away from our heritage. Good going Dad get out and give'er all you can in the next game ! ! ! !

I am rather divided on this one.  Generally, I would say the "caller" was pretty mean spirited to call the police.  I have had MANY games of street hockey myself,(long before it was "ok"for girls to play)BUT, since we were always on our OWN street, in front of one of the player's houses, and within earshot of half a dozen mothers, we were kept to a modicom of noise and our language was clean. Having approached a game of street hockey a couple of weeks back, I was thoroughly disgusted at the language coming from these kids. There were 2 sets of adults on the sidelines, and although they MAY not have been the parents of any of the kids, they certainly had lots to say as to the player's actions, but yet, not ONE correction for the language being used.  If the person who called the police in the other incident had been subjected to the language I heard from these kids, I don't blame her one bit.  In MY day, it would have iniated a soap "treatment."

If you can't play and still consider other poeople, then you don't deserve to play. Some may be just plain tired, be ill, have worked the night shift, dealing with difficult physical or emotional issues, greiving, and the list goes on, BUT, again, a polite request works wonders.

It is wrong for the authorities to make this time honored Canadian tradition illegal!!  Too many kids now a days sit for hours in front of a computer and are getting obese.  There is something wrong with a government that restricts children from going outside and getting exercise.  They are always promoting participaction WELL!!!!!!!

An example of too much government. Make a rule and someone has to follow it. Why do we always assume the other guy is too dumb to take care!

Yes, I grew up in Fort William, ON (now Thunder Bay) in the 1950's and 60's and

street hockey games were on in every neighbourhood throughout the winter months.

Now I know all we had was B&W TV to keep us indoors, but I am sure the cold winter

air did us a lot more good than being indoors.

Come on you government guys, get with it!

Road hockey on a Saturday, anywhere in Canada is awesome. I can see a late night game and in our case growing up in Northern Ontario, Sunday's were generally quieter but calling the police!!! If someone were ill or a shift worker we usually moved down the road.

Proves how introverted society has become and just assumes this is what to do because I saw it on television.....Bravo David Sasson for playing outdoors with all the kids.

With ON Liberals forcing 4 year olds into school full time, when do kids have time to be kids? I used to make street hockey my entertainment - watching the neighbourhood boys and girls play hockey. It's where they have a healthy outlet for their frustrations, but hold the language, please. Anyone, any age can spout four letter words. It takes someone with intelligence to use proper language. My cousin played on a rink at the school and, at that time, equipment was non-existent; they used a large chink from the coal furnace as a puck. Those players turned out to be lifelong buddies - playing together, going to war together and growing old together.

I grew up in Scarborough, Ontario and when I got married and my family came along and they were all boys, they all played street hockey from the oldest to the youngest and I still have pictures of my youngest who at that time was two years old  with his little hockey stick because he wanted to be a part of the game with his brothers and their dad and of course the neighbour kids and there dad's.  To this police officer who fined him, was he married, did he have kids whether boys or girls, was he a person who got out and played with his kids, did he know how to play street hockey or anything like that.  My response to myself I don't think so.  To the person that complained did they have any children and if they did, did they play with their children and have fun and smiled at the fact it is great that these kids know how to play together, getting fresh air into their lungs and enjoying themselves, I think that this person has no idea what it means to play and have fun.  To this person shame on you.  My children are all grown up now, they have children of their own and actively play sports, baseball, hockey and yes street hockey.  The person that lives next door to them is an active police officer and yes he has a son as well and yes he gets out their and plays street hockey and has just as much as the kids do.  So to all those who enjoy their children, enjoy street hockey kudos to you who enjoy this kind of activity.   Kids need more of this.

I hate when people say that being canadian means you like hockey, or you play hockey/street hockey. its like saying all canadians live in igloos and have beavers as pets.

i am canadian, born and raised, and i hate hockey. street hockey especially because there is no reason for a bunch of kids to be in the middle of the road. the road is for cars not for children running around.

my neighbour's car was dented by the puck of one of these kids, and while the parents of my street are good about being outside with teh kids while they play, no one so much as apologized for denting the car.

there is a perfectly good school yard in most neighour hoods, let them play there, away from the road and leave their neighbours in peace.

I remember, we loved visiting our relatives that lived in the city, because we found it so cool and odd to play in the street.  we played hockey on the local rink, mind you the village I grew up in has only two roads, can't even call them streets, and we would have been killed by oncoming traffic.  i think it was pushed a little too far by calling the cops.  And even further by giving out a ticket.    That person should move if he/she is not wanting to hear kids playing.  I take pity on city kids that have no backyards, the street is one of the only places they can play.  I would rather see them playing in the street, then causing trouble in the street.  I am not a hockey fan either, but I will never stop or complain about other people loving and playing it.
