Where's the Best Hotel in Canada?

Where do you like to stay when you're on vacation: hostel, b&b, hotel, campground? Tell us about your favourite hotel.

On vacation, I'll stay at B&B's and enjoy it as much as I have five-star hotels. I don't have a preference—I'm just looking for a clean place to get some sleep.

My favourite B&B, in Quebec City, also happens to be where I had the worst night's sleep ever. I'd go back for the homemade breakfasts and friendly owners, but I'd get a room off the courtyard, not overlooking the street. Residential does not mean quite.

Tell us about your favourite hotel in Canada. Where is it, and what do you love about it: the view, the room service, the plush mattress? Don't forget to post photos if you have them.

This summer, on my way home from a trip to Newfoundland, I stayed at the Fairmont Algonquin, in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, New Brunswick. This is a beautiful hotel, built in 1889 in Canada's first seaside resort town, and rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1914. The building itself, the grounds, the service - absolutely EVERY aspect was the BEST! Making the stay even better was the fact that this whole town is designated a "National Historic District" and is just the right size for walking to see everything. At the Algonquin, they have a resident "canine ambassador" named Smudge, a beautiful yellow Lab originally trained to be a Canadian Guide Dog for the Blind. She makes you feel welcome as soon as you enter the lobby, and you can sign up to take her for walks or play with her. There are several places to dine at the Algonquin, including the Rooftop Garden, which has wonderful views of the bay.
